As Mark Twain said, “the secret of getting ahead is getting started”. So here I am, getting started on my first ever blog, and I’ve already opened with a classic cliché Twain quote, so we’re off to a good start.
A very dear friend of mine recently introduced me to scrapbook journaling. She’s opened me up to a whole new world of obsession: I now spend endless hours browsing through #artjournaling posts on Instagram; countless weekends are whiled away in art shops and on art websites picking out the perfect washi tapes, and my fingertips seem to permanently be covered in pritt stick glue. Whilst I love this newfound hobby of mine, there are limits. Pages are filled with photographs, ticket stubs, notes from friends- all wonderful memories that I long to hold on to. There isn’t much room, though, for writing. Or in my case, rambling. My scrapbook is a snapshot of days and trips and holidays that I want to remember, but I longed for somewhere to spill the entirety of the thoughts in my head out. That very same dear friend then told me, with an air of “I can’t believe you’ve not already done this”, to create a blog. So here we are! Thanks, Elsie, you’re my biggest fan and I fully expect you to have feedback on every single post I share.
Whilst I have always had a vivid imagination and a love of words, I’ve never felt that anyone would be interested in my own writing. Do I even have anything worth writing about? Then one day a few months ago, after reciting a poem I had written for a close friend’s baby shower, I saw that my words had brought her to tears. She sobbed as she hugged me, and I felt strangely powerful- in a totally non-sadistic manner. It was then that I realised that even if it was only those close to me who would be moved by what I wrote, that was more than good enough for me. So, to all my friends and family reading this (hi Mum!), I hope that this blog brings you a little bit more of an insight into the thoughts that float around in my head.
What will I be writing about? A little bit of this, a little bit of that…Who knows, but I hope you enjoy coming along for the ride with me.
